Foundation Governors

Governors play a large and varied role in the running of our schools. The image of governors’ meetings being mainly to do with decisions such as choosing the colour of paint for the classroom walls is very wide of the mark. These days the tasks of governors include setting the school budget, appointing the staff, monitoring academic standards, and overseeing the wider development of the school. Another popular image is that governors spend most of their time in long meetings. While meetings obviously remain important (and are often not too long), governors are just as likely to be found in and around the school classrooms, talking to pupils and discussing issues and developments with the school staff.

In a Church of England Voluntarily Aided (CEVA) school, foundation governors are particularly important. They comprise half the governing body, and while they do many of the things described above, they have a particular responsibility for maintaining the Christian distinctiveness of the school. In both St. Mary's School and Milton School our own foundation governors spend time visiting school assemblies, taking an active part in organising and conducting pupil worship and helping the staff to develop Christian awareness in children.

These varied tasks can make use of a wide range of skills and backgrounds, and governors are drawn from many walks of life, bringing a range of experiences to share. Whatever their background, all have a commitment to contributing to how our children develop during these vital years.
