To the Glory of God

by Anne Pike

Having been inspired by the stained glass windows inthe chancel I felt that to do an interpretation in fabric for the High Altar would be lovely. As a family we wanted to offer a gift to St. Mary's and so the idea was borne.

Following the Craft Exhibition in May 2006, several people expressed a desire to quilt, and so our working part was formed. We have spent many happy hours together creating this altar frontal.

Those involved:

  • Anne Clarke
  • Vi Collis
  • Edith English
  • Liz Frayne
  • Connie Goddard
  • Joan Palmer
  • Barbara Powell
  • Mary Sargent
  • Anne Pike

Quilting stitches added by:

  • The Revd Canon Alan Gill
  • Margery Gill
  • The Very Revd David Frayne
  • The Revd Jane Hedges

also my family and grandchildren.

Grateful thanks to Sharon Garrick for allowing us to use her design for the stained glass windows and to Sandie Ferguson for her interpretation of the centre panel.

Dedication

At the end of our Flower Festival weekend, on Sunday 15th July 2007, a special "Songs of Praise" service was held on the themes of the Flower Festival. The new altar frontal was dedicated at this service, a fitting end to a joyous weekend.

Holy Stitches or Glass to Mass

by Joan Palmer

When Anne Pike asked if I would like to join the Quirky Quilters I was happy to give it a try having been involved with needlework since my schooldays - but with no experience of quilting. The first project was to make a small-sized quilt for a premature baby unit. That provided a good enjoyable initiation to quilting, but then we were "plunged right in at the deep end". Anne was going to make a quilted altar frontal for St Mary's as a gift from her family, and decided to invite our group to help. Although I sit opposite the chancel windows at the eight o'clock service and was well acquainted with the design it was difficult to visualise how it could possibly be reproduced in fabric.

At our next gathering Anne produced piles of coloured materials, already cut into different shapes and sizes, which had to be fitted together with black tape between the pieces to represent the leading of the windows. The enormous amount of hand sewing was done by Anne's family of all ages, the Quirky Quilters, and even Alan & Margery Gill, David & Liz Frayne and Jane Hedges were persuaded to add some holy stitches.

It was certainly a challenging project, but it all came together like a jigsaw puzzle, and now whenever I look at the windows I will always be reminded of the rewarding experience with a happy group of ladies and a skilful quilter sharing her talent with us, and her home-made cakes and cookies - all of which were much appreciated.
