More about Church weddings

A quarter of all weddings take place in a Church of England church. Some couples hold a Service of Blessing after taking their civil vows in a Registry Office.

The Church of England’s website explains what is understood by ‘Christian marriage’, what the church service involves, and some of the legal considerations. The Marriage Measure, which came into force in October 2008, grants couples the right to marry in a church with which they have a qualifying connection. For more details go to the Church of England website.

Another useful source of information is The Wedding Guide. This explains some of the legal requirements, what happens on the day, and gives details of the words and prayers used in the service.

The words used in a modern Church of England marriage service are available for free download in rtf format (useable by most computers).

Coming to have your banns read

Your banns will be read here on three Sundays before you get married here. They will be read at the main 10.00am service, which is a Eucharist.

A simple explanation of this service is being written - you will be able to access it from here when it is ready.
